What Makes a Great Tuna Melt?

A great tuna melt starts with a flavorful tuna saladโ€”usually made with canned tuna, mayo, a bit of mustard, and diced celery or onion for crunch. Itโ€™s piled onto your favorite bread, topped with cheese (cheddar is the go-to), then grilled until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is gooey.

This recipe sticks to the basics but gives you plenty of room to personalize. Swap in sourdough, rye, or even English muffins. Prefer Swiss over cheddar? Go for it. Add sliced tomato or pickles for extra zing. The beauty of the tuna melt is in its versatility.

Tuna Melt Tips for Success

  • Drain the tuna well so the salad isnโ€™t watery.
  • Use mayo to tasteโ€”start with less and add more if needed for creaminess.
  • Butter the bread for that perfect golden crispness.
  • Use a lid when meltingโ€”covering the skillet for a minute or two helps the cheese melt faster without burning the bread.

Storage and Make-Ahead Notes

Make Ahead:
You can prepare the tuna salad a day or two in advance and store it in an airtight container in the fridge. Assemble and grill the sandwich fresh for the best texture.

Storage:
Tuna melts are best eaten hot and fresh, but leftovers can be stored wrapped in foil in the fridge for up to 1 day. Reheat in a skillet or toaster oven to revive the crispinessโ€”avoid the microwave if possible.
