The Blackberry Bourbon Smash is a bold, fruity cocktail that’s both refreshing and vibrant. Muddled blackberries, fresh lime, and smooth bourbon come together with a splash of ginger beer for a sweet-tart sip that’s hard to resist. Looking for something lighter? Give our Blueberry Lemon Fizz a try for a sparkling, citrusy twist.

Ingredients & Substitutions for Blackberry Bourbon Smash

  • Blackberries: Fresh blackberries are used two ways—muddled into the drink and served on skewers for garnish.
  • Lime Juice: Freshly squeezed lime juice brings a tangy brightness that balances the sweetness. We used 2 large limes to get 3 tablespoons of juice, and recommend keeping an extra lime on hand for wedges.
  • Bourbon: Bourbon is the spirit base here. No need for top-shelf—just use a bottle you enjoy. If you’re out of bourbon, rye whiskey, rum, brandy, or cognac are all solid swaps.
  • Ginger Beer: This fizzy, non-alcoholic mixer adds a spicy ginger kick and bubbles. Ginger ale is a milder substitute, or go for club soda or Lemon-lime soda, if you prefer less spice.

Can I Use Frozen Blackberries?

Absolutely. Frozen blackberries work well both for muddling and garnish. Just keep in mind they may release more juice when muddled, so consider reducing the sugar slightly. They’ll also help keep your drink chilled longer.

Can I Substitute a Different Fruit?

Yes, feel free to switch it up! Try raspberries, blueberries, or strawberries in your Blackberry Bourbon Smash for a flavorful twist. Raspberries are especially high on my list to try next.

How To Make a Non-Alcoholic Blackberry Bourbon Smash

Transform your Blackberry Bourbon Smash into a mocktail with just a few easy swaps:

  • Replace the bourbon with a non-alcoholic whiskey alternative, apple cider, or a blend of fruit juices (like blackberry and lime).
  • Keep the muddled blackberries, lime juice, and sugar for that signature flavor.
  • Ginger beer stays—it’s non-alcoholic and keeps the drink fizzy and flavorful.
  • Garnish as usual with frosted blackberries and lime wedges.

You’ll end up with a gorgeous, refreshing drink everyone can enjoy!
