Spread a generous layer of softened butter on one side of each slice of Texas toast.
On the non-buttered side of two slices, layer the cheese and any optional ingredients you desire. Top with the remaining two slices, buttered side facing out.
Heat a skillet over medium heat. Place the sandwiches in the skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted.
Remove from the skillet, cut in half, and serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce or sides.
