Sloppy Joe Grilled Cheese combines saucy sloppy joe filling with melted cheddar and buttery Texas toast for the ultimate comfort sandwich.

Ingredients

Sloppy Joe

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • ¼ cup yellow onion, finely diced
  • ¾ cup ketchup
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 tablespoon light brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Grilled Cheese

  • ½ cup (1 stick / 113 g) unsalted butter, softened and divided
  • 10 slices Texas toast
  • 10 slices sharp cheddar cheese

Instructions

Sloppy Joe

  • In a medium skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and diced onions until the beef is no longer pink. Drain any excess grease if needed.
  • Stir in the ketchup, water, brown sugar, mustard, and garlic powder. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Cook for 3-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the brown sugar dissolves and the mixture becomes slightly thick and bubbly.

Grilled Cheese

  • Preheat a large skillet over medium-low heat.
  • Butter one side of each slice of Texas toast.
  • Working one or two sandwiches at a time, place a slice of bread butter-side down in the skillet. Top with a slice of cheddar cheese, about ½ cup of sloppy joe mixture, and another slice of cheese.
  • Place a second slice of bread on top, butter-side up.
  • Cook for 3-5 minutes, or until the bottom is golden brown. Carefully flip the sandwich and cook another 3-5 minutes until the other side is golden and the cheese is melted.
  • Remove from the skillet and serve warm.
